My Business Process

  • The manufacturing process - manufacturing of pipe insulation.
I was recently employed as a machine operator with a company which manufactures pipe insulation. The manufacturing process used was extrusion. In this process plastic pellets, stabilizers, preservatives and colouring were fed into the hopper of an extrusion machine and a continuous length of pipe came out the other end. This pipe was then cut into the required length and slit along its length for easy fitting by the builder or purchaser.

The 4 main components of this business process were:

  • Activities
In this process activities were both manual and automated. The machines used raw materials to produce, cut and slit the pipe insulation automatically. The manual activities included inspecting the finished product and packing it for shipping.

  • Resources
The resources in this process included the raw materials and people involved in producing the product. The raw material was plastic pellets, preservatives and coloring. People included customers, management staff, office staff and factory workers.

  • Facilities
This facilities used in this process included the building, extrusion machines, warehouse equipment and office equipment. The building consisted of  production area, raw material warehouse and finished product warehouse.

  • Information
The information in this process refers to the orders received. This may be payment received for the products that has to be delivered in a specific time. Additionally, the information could be that stock of these products in the warehouse has reached the Reorder Point.

MIS and my career

Management Information Systems used in my career includes:
  • MIS used to compile information
This include computer systems that are used to gather, anaylze and present information. A company can use past sales figures to identify periods of high and low sales. This information can then be used to schedule production and meet it production and sales goals.
  • MIS used in marketing
Information such as consumer buying trends and behaviors are used to design marketing activities. Companies use this information to ensure that the right strategies are used and they are aimed at the correct target markets.
  • MIS used in managing supply chains
Supply chain information helps to identify bottlenecks in purchasing raw materials and delivering finished products. Companies use supply chain management to plan and solve problems that could otherwise affect production and sales.
